Supriya,

Macromedia Flash player is free, but it is not Open Source, i.e. we don't have access to the source code of that application, and cannot implement our own additional features. The layman might be happy, but some developers might like to add extra stuff.

A simple analogy is Microsoft's Internet Explorer vs. Mozilla's Firefox (open source). I use firefox because I have many additional Telugu plugins available for it, implemented by people I know in their spare time...and which really make life easy.

Gnash may never be able to beat Macromedia flash, but still some people do get the kick out of using an application, whose entire source code they possess. :)
